EDDIE
An investment app that educates! Cryptocurrency made easy.
Role: Research & UX/UI
Timeline: January 2022
Individuals who currently invest are looking to step into a “proven” new-emerging market — cryptocurrency, in order to diversify their portfolios. They may be hesitant due to lack of information, or over information.
Why?
Right now, current cryptocurrency awarenesss is done through social forums (such as social media) — creating a disconnect between the user and the long-term benefits (under information). Or, current educational resources may use compleex jargon geared to a specific audience making it difficult for new users to grasp. With the rise of Web3, DAOs, and NFTs we expect the interest in a decentralized web to rise. Not just to defy current banking, capitalist and data-mining institutions but to find their community as well.
Hypothesis
An app that allows people to learn about cryptocurrency in a straight forward manner without the developer jargon normally attached. This will allow users to become confident in their trades, encourage awareness and educate others as well.
Not only is EDDIE valuable to users who currently invest, but it allows for new opportunities in the fintech space.
Segmented learning
Makes information easier to digest over time
Creates interest around an emerging market
Attracts new investors
Educate and invest vs. just investing
Potential new open-minded investors
Research
10 individuals were surveyed from a pool of selected creative communities.
Of the 10 individuals I interviewed, 30% of users own a balanced portfolio who would like to be further educated in cryptocurrency.
Insights
There was an equal number of both low and balanced portfolios
Current investors tend to keep up with their investments, with a frequency of 2-4x a week to only when there is news related to their holdings
Most survey takers are not currently interested in cryptocurrency
Those who find cryptocurrency confusing know some crypto termminology but do not fully grasp the terms
I asked questions about…
Their risk profiles.
Their perceived relationship to cryptocurrency and how accessible they find it.
Current experiences with investing including how often they use investing apps and their risk profiles.
Connects to trusted crypto resources
Ability to follow other investors and review their recent activity
As a community, vote on cryptos to add to the app
Connect to a bank account
Allow for paid promotion through “featured” coins or articles

What did work?
Ensuring visuals portrayed the information needed in order to ensure users are willing to engage with the app.
At first, I tried coming up with unique ways to portray graphs but in the end, I ended up basing graphs on existing frameworks and what has been successful in current apps. This ensures clarity through consistency and standards seen in other fintech apps and encourages recognition over recall.
What didn’t work?
Specific language had to be modified in order to ensure it was accessible for all reader levels and age groups (ex: exercise vs. lesson).
Some of the sketches did not make it through to digital wireframes due to accessibility reasons, from a reading comprehension standpoint to ensuring the hotspots were easily tapped on.

Eddie allows people to learn about cryptocurrency in a straightforward manner without the developer jargon normally attached. This allows users to become confident in their trades, encourages awareness and educates others.
Eddie’s design has its own characteristics, namely by exploring textures, giving Eddie a face and bright and colourful graphic motifs seen throughout the app accompanied by ensuring accessibility standards are met in order to support the educational aspect of the brand.
How was it created?
The Eddie logo was created by using vector lines to reflect the letters in “Eddie.” By using straight lines, I was able to “humanize” the brand, and give Eddie a face.
